Over 600 riders participated in the U.S. Pony Club Championships East held at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), Mill Spring, North Carolina on July 27-31, 2016. There were competitions in Dressage, Show Jumping, Eventing, Games, Tetrathlon and Quiz. Tryon treated the Pony Club competitors, as well as local community, to nightly entertainment and demonstrations - vaulting, an advanced games competition, and a lip-sync contest were among the highlights.
Competitors made history as the first riders to experience TIEC’s new cross-country course, designed by Captain Mark Phillips. “We are pleased to have the facility's first cross-country course rider be a Pony Club member,” said Mark Bellissimo, managing partner of Tryon Equestrian Partners. “Pony Club is where many top riders around the world begin their equestrian careers, and we are grateful for the investment Pony Club makes in shaping these young equestrians.”
West Tennessee Pony Club (WTPC) was well-represented this year’s Championships East with three members attending on Midsouth Region teams.
WTPC member Sarah Beth Slaughter, C1, attended the Games competition as part of a Midsouth Region scramble team. Sarah Beth qualified for Championships at the regional rally, and competed on the “Pickles” team. Pickles placed fourth in the Junior Division and proudly had zero Horse Management deductions – a good showing for Midsouth Region’s first Games Rally team.
The Games competitions are comprised of a series of gymkhana-style races with 4-member teams riding in various style relay races. The ability to quickly vault on and off your pony; handle the various pieces of equipment, such as tennis balls, flags and batons; and pass them to the next team mate, all while negotiating your speedy pony, are the fun Games competitions! The top teams from Games championships are invited to return to the Rolex Three Day Event every year as part of the Prince Philip Cup.
The Midsouth Region’s Show Jumping team cleaned up on awards! The team won both the overall performance award and the horse management award, plus individual awards. Members of the team were Caroline Biggs, Caroline Madden, Fleming Troup, and Anna Hayes, Stable Manager. Caroline Biggs won first individually. Caroline Madden was fourth individually. And Fleming Troup was second individually.
The Carolina/Midsouth Modified Team also placed first. Members were Maya Montani, Julia Gates, Keely Bechtol, Amarinthia Morton, and Leslie Zule, Stable manager. Julia Gates was first individually. Keely Bechtol was first individually in her division. Maya Montani earned a fifth place individual award. And Amarinthia Morton earned 10th individually.
The Midsouth Region fielded two teams for the Eventing Rally. Ethan Read, C2, and his sister, Grace Read, C1, both qualified during the regional rally to attend Championships. In order to qualify for U.S. Pony Club Championships, the competitors also have to successfully complete another USEA- recognized event within the previous year, as well as finish in the top 10 of the regional rally, which is also a USEA-recognized event - the Midsouth Horse Trials in Lexington, Kentucky.
In Eventing, the Midsouth Beginner Novice Team 1 placed third with 115.30 penalty points, just 5 penalty points behind the winner. Members of the team were Ashlyn Mitchell, Captain; Analise Hinebaugh, Aine O’Rourke, Ethan Read (WTPC), and Corinne Brunker, Stable Manager. Aine O’Rourke placed second individually, with only her dressage score of 29.5 and clear cross country and show jumping rounds. WTPC member Grace Read was on the Mid-South Beginner Novice Team 2, and placed 11th individually. The team placed first in Horse Management.
The Mid-South/Tri-State Preliminary Team placed third in the Preliminary division. Members were Brandi Podboy, Brooke Burchianti, Evelyn Juckett, and Clara Juckett, Stable Manager.
