UT Martin Takes Home a Pair Of Top-3 Team Finishes At West Alabama

Livingston, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams continued their strong starts to the 2018-19 season at the rodeo hosted by West Alabama on September 27-29, 2018. The men’s squad placed second out of 10 teams and the women’s squad finished third out of eight teams.
The UT Martin men’s team earned a season-best 600 points, finishing just 55 points behind Missouri Valley College. On the women’s side, UT Martin piled up 190 points, only 50 shy of top-ranked Arkansas-Monticello.
Bareback riding proved to be a successful event for the men’s team, as four cowboys notched points. Stetson Bierman came in second in average (142) after placing second in the opening round (77) and third in the short go (65). Blake Leamon split third in the first round with a 64 before splitting fourth with a 64 average. Bryce Sifford (sixth with a 61 average, sixth with a 61 in the first round) and Weston Hamilton (fifth with a 55 in the short go) also garnered points for UT Martin.
Chase Thrasher and Will McCraw each compiled points for UT Martin in calf roping. Thrasher secured impressive scores in all three phases, finishing first in the opening round (10.0), splitting second in average (19.8), and placing fourth in the short go (9.8). McCraw’s time of 11.4 seconds in the first round earned him sixth place.
Shara Adcock stood out for the women’s squad in breakaway roping, as the senior out of Smithville, Tenn. finished first in average (5.8), first in the short round (3.0), and third in the opening go (2.8).
In saddle bronc riding, Robert Haley turned in solid performances. He began by splitting first with a 75 in the opening round, placing second with a 144 average, and third with a 69 in his short go.
Hunter Styles accrued points in steer wrestling, as his time of 4.8 seconds was the second-best time in the short round.
The duo of Lauren Heck and Kaitlyn Thompson tallied points for UT Martin in goat tying. Heck earned second place for her 8.8-second effort in the first round, while Thompson split fourth in average (19.4) and finished sixth in both the opening go (9.2) and in the second round (10.2).
Three UT Martin cowboys generated points in team roping, as all three earned scoring finishes in each phase of the event. The team of Ethan Wheeler and Ross Mitchell finished first in the opening round (7.3), second in average (22.4), and fifth in the short go (15.1). UT Martin’s Carson Stroup teamed up with Tyler Cook from Murray State and that tandem placed third in average (23.8), fourth in the short round (14.6), and fifth in the first go (9.2).
Ashley Brooks and Raegan Taylor were each responsible for good scores in barrel racing. Brooks placed second in average (32.8), second in the short go (16.1) and third in the opening round (16.7) while Taylor finished second in the first round (16.62), fifth in the short go (21.25), and fifth in average (37.87).
In bull riding, Ryan McDaniel came through as the top scorer in the event as the only cowboy to register points in all three phases. The Yuma, Tenn. native came in first place with a 148 average, first place with a 76 in the opening round, and second place with a 72 in the short go.
UT Martin returns to action on October 11-13 at the rodeo hosted by Three Rivers Community College in Sikeston, Missouri.
