Oak View Stables Horse Show
Oak View Stables, Olive Branch, Mississippi, finished their schooling show season on Saturday, October 13, 2018 with their fifth show of the year. Under solidly cloudy skies, with temperatures hovering around 60 degrees, it was great show weather. Owner Rose Marie Lawson said this was their “41st season of horse shows.” Friday October 12th had been husband Wes’ birthday. “Next year the [October] show will be on his 70th birthday,” she said, so there will be some special celebrations at that show.
As always, whenever Wes Lawson is announcing, folks get a bit of humor mixed with the usual class instructions and introductions. Announcing the rider and horse, Over the Rainbow, Wes commented “that’s where bluebirds fly.” Another time, he held up his walking cane and asked me, “What is this?” I wasn’t sure, so he replied, “Raisin’ cane!” [groan]
The schooling shows cater to beginner and novice riders with two rings: one with cross rails and the other with a regular hunter course with jumps that can range in height from 2 ft. to 3 ft. 6 in. depending on the class.
Rose Marie said, “We’ve had good turnouts at our shows this year. We had 70 horses at our July show, about 50 horses at the last show, and about 40 horses at this show. At our July show, we ran the Derby on the grass course and the riders just loved it. We already have our show schedule planned for next year!”
Trey Lawson was glad to see all the “little kids in the saddle,” boding well for the future of hunter shows. “We have a good crowd; it’s a cool day; and the ponies are carting kids around quite nicely. We have lots of famous ponies here, often overlooked, but loved well by their riders. We have hunter riders, jumper riders, and eventers – all practicing [their crafts].” Trey said the riders are feeling good about moving up in the ranks, some moving up to equitation classes, for next season.
