By Ryne Rickman

Murray, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rounded out its 2018 fall rodeo season Nov. 15-17, 2018 at Murray State University. The men’s team placed third and the women’s squad came in sixth place in the team standings.

The UT Martin men’s team produced 415 points, only 10 points behind second-place West Alabama and 75 points behind leader Missouri Valley College. On the women’s side, UT Martin posted 75 points, while Southern Arkansas took home the team title with 246 points.

UT Martin accumulated a chunk of its men’s team points in the bareback riding event. Hunter Green continued his strong debut season with second-place finishes across the board: posting a 154 average after a 78 in the first round and a 76 in the short go. Blake Leamon also tallied points in all three phases: finishing fourth in average (146) and splitting fourth in both the opening round (72) and the second round (74). Stetson Bierman was the third UT Martin cowboy to compile scores in each of the three phases, as he split fourth in the short round (74), placed fifth in average (141) and finished sixth in the first go (67). Bryce Sifford split fourth in the opening round (72) and placed sixth in average (72) for UT Martin.

In calf roping, Chase Thrasher earned a top-3 finish in all three phases. His 19.5 average earned second place; he finished third in both the first round (9.9) and the short go (9.6). Craig Parks was the second UT Martin cowboy to score in the event: he placed sixth in both average (23.8) and the opening go (11.8).

Bailey Barrett represented UT Martin in breakaway roping, with a time of 3.0 seconds in the first round that split sixth.

Four more UT Martin cowboys dialed up points in steer wrestling, paced by Cole Harmon. The freshman out of Lafayette, Ala. came in second place with a 12.4 average, after times of 6.1 in the first round (split second) and 6.3 in the short go (third place). Wyatt Cole placed third in average (13.6) after his 6.4-second effort in the second round was good enough for fourth place. Logan Neal (event-best 5.9 seconds in the first round) and Robbie Van Holten (split fifth with 6.7 seconds in the first round) also put together scoring performances.

UT Martin saw three cowboys accrue points in team roping. The tandem of Quentin Sawyer and Will McCraw placed second in the opening round with a time of 6.3 seconds, also finishing fourth with an 18.2 in average. Carson Stroup teamed up with Murray State’s Tyler Cook to claim fifth place in average (20.2).

Casey Allen led the charge for the UT Martin women’s squad in barrel racing. The junior from Vandergrift, Pa. won the event with an average of 28.62 after placing first in the opening round (14.32) and finishing third in the short go (14.3).  Ashley Brooks came away with points in all three phases –fourth in average (28.97), fourth in the short go (14.51) and splitting fifth in the opening round (14.46). Fallon Fogarty also registered points in the event, as her 29.43 average and 14.88 in the short round each placed fifth.

The first of four scheduled 2019 Ozark Region rodeos takes place on Feb. 21-23, as UT Martin travels to Meridian, Miss. for a rodeo hosted by East Mississippi Community College.
