Mississippi Classic

Article & photos by Nancy Brannon

Kevin Hall and Rope the Ozarks productions once again brought the National Patriot and Junior American qualifier – the Mississippi Classic team Roping –to the Expo Center in Tunica, Miss. on December 8-9, 2018. Saturday featured the #13, #12, the Cowtown #11, and #10 Pick/Draw divisions, while on Sunday the #10 Patriot, #9, #8, and #7 divisions roped. This year, the Mississippi Classic decided to partner with Rope Metrics for numbering and scoring the ropers.

Lyndse Schober said that entries were down a bit this year due to the weather. It was a cold (in the 30°s) and rainy weekend, with a winter storm watch predicted for parts of the mid-south on Sunday. But there were hot soup beans and cornbread at the concession stand to warm folks.

This was one of many qualifier events for The Patriot, which will be in Fort Worth, Texas on February 25 – March 4, 2019, but this is the only one in the mid-south region. At least 4,000 to 5,000 contestants are expected at The Patriot this year, Schober said. It is the largest multi-equestrian event in Fort Worth and includes team roping, barrel racing, tie down roping, steer wrestling, and all the usual rodeo events.

The Junior American is for ropers ages 19 years and younger. The Junior World Team Roping Championships were held in Guthrie, Oklahoma on November 24-25, 2018.
