Independence Mississippi High School Hosts Fundraiser Trail Ride by Gidget Lentz Every year the Independence High School FFA (Independence, Mississippi) sponsors a trail ride and BBQ. This event is to help raise funds for all students to participate competitions throughout the year. This trail ride takes place at Arkabutla Lake, and every year it seems that participation is growing. This fall there were 175 participants. This event is becoming well known. There were riders from Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia and Alabama. With the event gaining so much popularity, it is almost certain that with each trail ride the number of participants will rise. What brings people back and the attracts new riders to join? The answer is not only the friendships being made but also the great barbeque being enjoyed. If you love to ride and have never been able to participate in this trail ride, you must give it a try. This event has proven over and over again to be relaxing and fun. Not only has the money raised gone towards the students of the FFA program, but also gone to an equally great cause. This is the second year that the Independence High School FFA has given to the Arkabutla Physically Challenged Hunters Association. This association along with the Army Corps of Engineers at Arkabutla Lake provides many physically challenged people the opportunity to deer hunt for a week. The hunt takes place in December at Arkabutla Lake. Again the participants come from states as close as Tennessee and as far away as Florida. This year the FFA donated $900.00 to the association. This winter has been a wet one, and it has cheated many riders out of enjoying trail riding. March 30th will be a great opportunity to take part in a spring trail ride hosted by Independence High School FFA Group. The trail ride takes place at Bayou Point at Arkabutla Lake.
