Who Will Be The 2002 Josey World Champions? Josey Jr. World Barrel Race - May 3rd - 5th. Josey Reunion Round-Up May 10th - 12th. All eyes will be on the Josey Ranch, as World Champions, R.E. and Martha Josey get ready to host two exciting events during the first two weeks in May, 2002. The first is the 21st Annual World Champion Jr. Barrel Race, open to competitors age 20 and under, scheduled for May 3-5, with check in on May 2nd. Last year's competition saw 287 contestants from 29 states and Canada travel to the Josey Ranch in Marshall, Texas. With an estimated $150,000.00 in cash, prizes and scholarships, this year's event is expected to be even more spectacular. Festivities will begin Thursday evening, May 2nd, with the famous Josey Ranch Fish Fry. An action packed first go round of barrel racing will begin early Friday morning, ending with entertainment that evening. Immediately following the second go round Saturday, the Josey Ranch will host their Annual BBQ Banquet Saturday night at the Marshall Civic Center. Special awards will be presented at the banquet including the Mom Arthur Award, in honor of Martha Josey's mother, Best Dressed Cowgirl and Cowboy, Best Decorated Horse and the Purina Horse Management Speech Contest winners. Other events planned during the competition are the Mutton Bustin' Contest, the Josey World Champion Stick Horse Race and the famous R.E. Josey Golf Tournament. Sunday morning will begin with a Cowboy Church Service, followed by the top 50 in each division setting their sights on that perfect run! Keith Eisley, Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association's Specialty Act Of The Year, will entertain the top 10 Josey Stick Horse Finalists and root for the top finalists in the Jr. and Sr. Division. Scholarships will also be awarded to contestants of the Josey Jr. World and the Reunion Round-Up. Ariat International sponsors one such scholarship in the amount of $1,500.00 for the Martha Josey Excellence in Horsemanship Award. "Barrel racing can open up many wonderful opportunities, but we want to stress the importance of being the best you can be in all aspects of life, especially education," says Martha. Scholarship applications are reviewed and chosen by a Scholarship Committee. All scholarships and donations are tax deductible. The following weekend, May 10-12, brings on the 9th Annual Josey Reunion Round-Up, and what an event it is! This competition invites all former Josey students, over 50,000 of them, to compete in an exclusive barrel racing and calf roping competition, with no age limit, for cash, prizes and scholarships. The Purina Mills America's Horse Country trailer will be on hand for the Reunion, providing an educational, interactive exhibit for horse enthusiasts of all ages. The Reunion will include a Saturday night Josey Fish Fry, Ribbon Roping Event and a Roping Contest for the younger ropers. The barrel race will be run in the 4-D format. HorseCity.com will sponsor $2,000.00 added money for the 4-D Reunion Barrel Race as follows: $750.00 added to the First Go, $750.00 added to the Second Go and $500.00 added to the Short Go. The winner of each division will take home a trophy saddle and the highest placing senior in the 4-D will also receive a trophy saddle. HorseCity.com will also sponsor $1,000.00 added money for the Reunion Jr. and Sr. Roping as follows: $750.00 added to the Sr. Roping and $250.00 added to the Jr. Roping. Winners in the Jr. and Sr. Tie Down Roping contest will receive a trophy saddle. Corporate sponsors represented at all three events include, Ariat International, Circle Y of Yoakum, Texas, Elder Randall Dodge, Pfizer Animal Health, Purina Mills and Sooner Trailers. All of these events are open to the public and provide a lot of entertainment for the entire family. Visiting with old friends and making new ones is always a top priority at the Josey Ranch.
