Show season for mid-south saddle clubs has suffered some “wash outs” this year with all the rain the area received this spring and early summer. “We had so much rain in May that we had one show, May 2nd, and then our shows were rained out until June 20th,” said Lydia Holland, Vice President of Woodstock Cuba Saddle Club (WCSC), who also serves as the Youth Director. “Friday July 12th was our fourth show, but we have to try to get in a total of 12 shows before the second week of September. So our season was really just getting started in July.”

The WCSC Youth Group has been busy this year. The Youth Group hosted a free Show Ring Etiquette clinic in April with instructor Patti Barber. There were 26 mounted participants (ages 4 thru 17), with several others auditing. Ms. Barber discussed how to properly enter the show ring, spacing, passing, body positioning, horsemanship questions, and behavior outside the show ring.

The Youth Group held a car wash on June 7 and the money raised was used to send 22 kids to the TN HS Rodeo Finals, held in Memphis. They held another one Saturday July 12 and the proceeds helped fund their Youth Summer Blowout Party, scheduled for August 16.

The Youth Group hosted a free Barrel Racing clinic on June 22 with Amanda Capps from F5 Farms. Amanda gave one-on-one tips to all 17 riders who participated; after three clinic hours there were vast improvements with each child.
The Youth Group will be going on an overnight camping trip in September and a trail ride this fall, both at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park.

The WCSC Queen and Princesses are leaders in the Youth Group events. Each year the members of Woodstock Cuba Saddle Club elect their Royalty, which consists of Queen, Princess, and Buckaroo Princess, at the annual awards banquet. For 2014, the members choose Bailee Todd as Queen, Deana Becerra as Princess and Olivia Morgan as Buckaroo Princess. This year’s banquet will be held in November, when 2015 Royalty will be chosen.

Woodstock Cuba Saddle Club was founded in 1961 and shows are every Friday night (weather permitting) at 7:30 pm at 7211 Woodstock Cuba Rd.  Coming early in August – August 2 – the first annual All Gaited Horse Show at WCSC; starts at 7 pm. Check the website for classes, entry fees, and added money jackpots.
