Southern Run Pony Club at USPC Championships

2014/08/03

By Meredith Tipton

The Southern Run Pony Club (SRPC), representing the Deep South Region, sent 12 competitors to Lexington, Kentucky for the 2014 USPC Championships & Festival. This competition and educational experience took place July 15-20, 2014. SRPC had riders from Oxford, Hernando, and Tupelo, MS; Eads, Cordova, and Memphis, TN representing the club. Of the 12 members from SRPC, three riders competed in Dressage, four in Eventing, three in Quiz, and two in Show Jumping.

One Dressage rider, Libby Sleeper, competed at the Training level and Alexa Sinha and Karen Guzman competed in First Level. Alexa and Karen won the musical freestyle Pas de Deux with their ride set to the music from Peter Pan!
SRPC sent three Jr. Ds to the Quiz competition: Natalie Hanisco, Gabby Bray and Catherine Waddell. The scramble team that included Gabby and Catherine finished 13th out of 35 teams. Gabby Bray finished 7th individually out of over 150 competitors!

Libby Bauer and Chandler Head competed in the Intro division in Show Jumping Championships. Their team finished 8th overall.

In Eventing, Lauren Chandler competed at the Beginner Novice level and Elizabeth Hubbard was Stable Manager for the team. Lauren went clean in cross country and show jumping, finishing just with her dressage score and placing second in her division. Cassidy Doss represented SRPC at the Novice level and had a beautiful, double clear cross country run – no jumping and no time penalties.

In addition to regular Pony Club members, SRPC also sent a Horsemaster member to National Championships. Horsemasters is the newest pony club program that is open to adult members. This year at nationals, there were 11 Horsemaster members who competed. SRPC's own Missy Carlisle competed in the Beginner Novice level and won her division, finishing with only her dressage score.

The educational programs of USPC Festival, July 19-21, followed the five days of Championships competition. Pony Club members could choose to participate in the mounted or unmounted portions of Festival. SRPC had several riders take part in mounted festival: Libby Sleeper, Chandler Head, Libby Bauer, Alexa Sinha, Karen Guzman, Cassidy Doss, Sydney Doss, and Lauren Rainwater. Wendy Jue, Elizabeth Jue, and Catherine Waddell took part in the unmounted portion of Festival. Mounted session clinics were offered in disciplines such as Show Jumping, Dressage, Cross Country, ground training, Competitive Trail, Mounted Games, Polocrosse, and more. The SRPC girls were able to ride with upper level event riders, such as middle Tennessee’s own Bill Hoos and his wife Lori, who taught Dressage; Pony Club national examiners; and college riding instructors. For those wishing to try out foxhunting, an early morning Foxhunt started at 6:30 am on Monday July 21.
