Townsend Rodeo

2014/10/03

On August 29 and 30, 2014 some of the top ranked Cowboys and Cowgirls, as well as top bulls and horses, came to the Church of the Cove, 642 Wears Valley Road in Townsend, TN for Pro Rodeo action at the annual Townsend Rodeo. This year’s Southern Rodeo Association/IPRA rodeo was part of the Cotton Eyed Joe’s Buckle Series, sponsored by the Outlaw Rodeo Company, who provided the arena and stock for the Labor Day weekend’s competition. The last event in the Cotton Eyed Joe’s Buckle Series will be November 7-9, 2014 at the Tri State Exhibition Center in Cleveland, Tn.

Several top names in rodeo competed: 2-time International Youth Finals bareback winner Casey Cason; Jason Tucker, IPRA team roping winner from last year; and Amanda Stewart, last year’s IPRA breakaway winner.

Tyson Smith of Wild and Wonderful Photography said he enjoyed the rodeo on Friday night and the opportunity to shoot something new, “a new challenge compared to wildlife in the Smoky Mountains.” There are several photos of the rodeo posted on his website, where he also writes about his introduction to rodeo:

The Labor Day weekend provided additional opportunities for enjoying the Smokies: camping at any of the many campgrounds in the Townsend area; hiking the beautiful trails, such as in Cades Cove, and tubing down the Little River.

About Photographer Tyson Smith: Smith has long been interested in nature and wildlife photography, but this was his first venture into photographing Rodeo and it presented a new challenge for him: getting good photos in the dark. A very high ISO setting on his camera did the trick!

Smith is a native of Copperhill in East Tennessee, and a retired physician. Photography is his second “career.” He regularly volunteers to take photos of adoptable pets at the Blount County Animal Center and shoots various levels of sports. The rodeo combines his interests in domestic animals and sports.
