Horse Poor Barrel Race
Folks in Starkville, Mississippi had a lot to celebrate in October. The 15th anniversary of the Mississippi Horse Park was celebrated in grand style at the Horse Poor Barrel Race October 16-18, 2014. Plus, the Mississippi State University Extension Service celebrated the 100th anniversary. The celebration kicked off Friday afternoon as competitors were treated to slices of the special anniversary cakes. Then the fast action of the RFD-TV’s American Qualifier Event got started with 135 top competitors hoping to qualify for the world’s richest one-day rodeo. Nearly 1500 barrel racers entered the full weekend of fast action.
Starkville’s Barrel Racing top ten qualifiers for the RFD-TV American were: Quay Eaves of Louisville, MS with Wicked Leo, Ericka Nelson, Rylee Elliott, Ashlee Kalina, Sarah Rose McDonald, Paige Willis, Laura Kennedy, Kassie Mowry, Blaise Bercegeay, and Max Chouest.
Eaves’ time of 14.792 was a good 0.175 seconds faster than second place Ericka Nelson on Nash’s Moon. These folks will be heading to the Semi Finals in Fort Worth, Texas. Kyndal McCown and Sompingottastop were just out of the top 10 with a time of 15.150, a heartbreaking 0.002 seconds behind tenth place Max Chouest and RLJ High Intedsity. Tying for 12th place were: Nealy Dalton, Morgan Breaux, Lauren sparks, and Robyn Herring, all with times of 15.157.
Barrel Racing continued on Saturday with the $5,000 added Open 5D Jackpot and the $4,000 added Better Barrel Races Southeastern Regional Finals. Finishing on Sunday was the $5,000 added Open 5D Jackpot.
Quay Eaves and Wicked Leo placed first in 1D of the Better Barrel Race 2D Slot Race, taking home over $2800. Summer Huff and Run N With Ease earned over $2300 for second place. Ericka Nelson on Nash’s Moon were third, picking up over $1300. Rylee Elliott on Wee Feelin Special placed fourth, and Ashlee Kalina and Darlin Joe were fifth.
In the 2D, Taylor Young on Kiss My Skooter took top honors and over $1900 in prize month. Katie Brown on red Makers Flit were second; Megan Jamerson on Deep Laughing were third; Ryan Lovendahl on Blazin Black Jet placed fourth; and Laine Rowan on Flaming Gold Digger rounded out fifth.
In Saturday’s Open 5D Jackpot, Jamie Hodges on Flying Finances earned over $1400 for the top place in 1D. Summer Huff on Run N With Ease was again second, adding another $1255 to her winnings purse. Jennifer Arnold on Paris Firewater placed third with over $1000 in winnings. Kaci Bishop on Coronafromgetgo was fourth; and Cambrie Delaune on Okee Doekee Mate rounded out fifth place.
Brittany Lester on Heaven’s Special Go was tops in the 2D. Jayme Jo Shomaker on SF It’s EZ BN French won the 3D, and Hilary Branch on VF Looking for Gold was first in the 4D.
In the Better Barrel Race Finale, Jamie Hodges on Flying Finances earned her way to the 1D top, taking home over $1300 in prize money. Summer Huff on Run N With Ease placed second; Jennifer Arnold on Paris Firewater was third; Kaci Bishop on Coronafromgetgo was fourth; and Cambrie Delaune on Okee Doekee Mate was fifth.
In 2D, it was Brittany Lester on Heaven’s Special Go in first place, followed by Stephanie Wheeler on Ms Frenchman Bully in second. Talmadge Green on Dashin Live Rockette placed third, and tied for fourth on VF Sporty Design with Catherine Medlock on Starberts Little Joe.
In 3D, Jayme Jo Shomaker was once again the leader on SF It’s EZ BN French. In 4D, Hilary Branch on VF Looking for Gold was the winner. And in 5D, Denise Alexander was first on Special N Firewater.
On Sunday, the weekend’s leading riders swapped positions again; this time Kaci Bishop on Coronafromgetgo led the 1D in the Open Average. Jennifer Arnold was second on Paris Firewater; Hayley Tanner on Cajun Flirt placed third; Ericka Nelson on Nash’s Moon was fourth; and Blake Monroe on LF Designerwood was fifth.
In Sunday’s Open 5D Jackpot, Mandy Terry on Another Rare Bug led the 1D, while Hayley Tanner on Cajun Flirt placed second. Quay Eaves on Wicked Leo were back in the running, placing third. Rylee Elliott on Wee Feelin Special placed fourth, and Donnie Reece on Tsunami Sue swept fifth. Quay Eaves also won the 4D on Soft Avender.
