Relay for Freedom Reigns

The Rotating Pair Relay, held at Brownland Farm, Franklin, Tenn. on Friday evening September 13, 2019, raised nearly $20,000 for local non-profit Freedom Reigns Ranch. The relay was a special class held during the Brownland Farm Fall II show, September 11-15, 2019.

Freedom Reigns Ranch is a 501(c)(3) organization located in Thompsons Station, Tenn. that uses horses to help mentor children and young adults who have been through emotional trauma and other life-challenges – completely free-of-charge. “Hope rides here” is there motto. Find more information at

The Rotating Pair Relay was a fairly simple concept, but proved to be anything but simple in its execution. Two horse and rider pairs jumped a 3’ jumper style course, having to change who was jumping at least one time, but could change as many times as they wanted. If there was a rail knocked down or a refusal, there was a mandatory switch. Teams made up for time by strategizing where the switch-ups happened on course. Teams were auctioned prior to the class with a Calcutta, supervised by auctioneer Seth Clayton.

The event, generously hosted by Brownland Farm, with $1,000 Purse sponsors Matt Piccolo/Arrow Hill Farm and Anne Holliday (Independent Beamer Dealer), was a rousing success and a highlight of the week for many competitors and spectators.  Costumes were strongly encouraged, and the costumes were incredible! They ranged from Mario, to TuTu’s and Unicorns, to Retired Superheroes, a Giraffe and Zebra, Toy Story, and more. One young competitor exclaimed at the end of the relay, “This is the most fun I’ve ever had a horse show!” Silver Bay Jumps, Remax Lipman Group, and Dover Saddlery also provided prizes and complimentary refreshments for spectators.

“We are humbled and so grateful for the support shown by the incredible horse community,” said Freedom Reigns Founder, Carissa Ramsdell. “It’s because of generous folks like you that we are able to offer all programs at Freedom Reigns Ranch completely free-of-charge, and get to see hope enter the hearts of so many kids and young adults day after day, week after week, season after season. Thank you!”

Relay 7: The winners of the Relay were Shroom and Vroom (Annie Miller and Dani Grice, dressed as Mario and Luigi).
