Southeastern Showdown and TNHSRA Rodeo
Several members from the Tennessee High School Rodeo Association traveled to Perry, Georgia on November 6-8, 2020 for the Southeastern Showdown, which attracted over 17,000 entries. This is part of the Western Legacy Series to which the National High School Rodeo Association contributed $10,000 to be used toward added money in prizes. These two rounds of rodeo were open to junior high and high school NHSRA members who came from Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
The contestants who represented TNHSRA put on a good show, placing in several events and in the average. Top five finishers in the first round included: Taylor Dunlap first in Poles; Emma Kate Wilder first in Goat Tying; Anna Wilder second in Barrels; Dylan Delmas third in Steer Wrestling; Blaize Deere fourth in Poles; Anna Wilder fourth in Goat Tying; and Lane Webb fifth in Tie Down Roping.
The top five in the second round included: Denver Moore second in Bareback; Blair Mabry third in Steer Wrestling; Blaize Deere third in Goat Tying; Blaize Deere fifth in Poles.
The top five average winners were Emma Kate Wilder first in Goat Tying; Denver Moore second in Bareback; Blaize Deere second in Poles; Anna Wilder third in Barrels and fifth in Goat Tying. Blaize Deere also won Reserve All-Around Cowgirl for the weekend!
In addition to the two rounds of rodeo, Cinch Jeans sponsored a Varsity Cup Challenge in which ten teams (which were each comprised of one contestant per event) competed in a rodeo. Teams from Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and a Wild Card Team competed for the $2000 Team prize, as well as individual event prizes of $400 for first place, $200 for second place, and a Cinch Jeans Certificate for third place.
Team Tennessee (Ali Covey, Blaize Deere, Blair Mabry, Denver Moore, Dylan Delmas, Emma Kate Wilder, Lane Webb, Sage Isom, and Taylor Dunlap) came away as the Team Winner, as well as placing in the top three in several events. Cinch awarded the team $2000 plus some nice canvas travel bags.
On the heels of the Showdown weekend, TNHSRA was back in full swing at their regular season rodeo held in Athens, Alabama, November 13 – 14, 2020. During Saturday night’s grand entry, contestants honored all the branches of the armed forces with special recognition of each branch and a separate entrance for each branch’s flag. They followed the armed forces tribute by awarding a buckle to their announcer Jaime Osbrink to thank him for his service to them as announcer. In addition to two rounds of rodeo competition, the contestants and their families had a blast in a “Tug-of-War” after Saturday night’s performance, and then enjoyed fellowship around a bonfire with s’mores, hot chocolate, a little karaoke and some live guitar music.
The average winners for each event were awarded prizes donated by the local Tractor Supply Company. Saturday’s winners were Ainsley Irani in Barrel Racing, Blaize Deere in Pole Bending, Keilee Garton in Goat Tying, Lainey Hutchison in Breakaway Roping, Denver Moore in Bareback Riding, Lane Webb in Tie Down Roping, Blair Mabry in Steer Wrestling, and Lane and Bryson Tays in Team Roping.
Sunday’s winners were Ali Covey in Barrel Racing, Blaize Deere in Pole Bending, Anna Wilder in Breakaway Roping, Emma Kate Wilder in Goat Tying, Johnson Yarbro in Tie Down Roping, Dylan Delmas in Steer Wrestiling, and Lane Webb & Bryson Tays in Team Roping.
