While it may sound ironic, the Volunteer Ranch Horse Association (VolRHA) came to the Memphis, Tenn. area to “Beat the Heat” on September 18-19, 2021. The area is known for its hot, humid weather, but fall weather was definitely in place this weekend. However, the remnants of Hurricane Nicholas hit the area on Saturday morning, bringing showers all morning long. But that presented no problem, since the show utilized both the covered outdoor arena and the indoor arena at the Show Place Arena in Cordova, Tenn.

Show secretary Katie Hutton said this was one of their largest shows this season, with 125 horses entered to show over the weekend.

On Saturday, Herd Work, Cutting, Ranch Riding and Trail classes kept the covered outdoor pen busy, while the Hackamore and Bridle divisions got underway in the indoor arena. Later were the Working Cow Horse, Boxing, and Youth classes.

Sunday’s show started early indoors with the Derby classes and the Bridle Spectacular.  After these two special divisions, classes got underway outdoors with Showmanship, proceeded to the Conformation classes, and finished with Ranch Reining. Indoors, classes continued with Ranch Reining, Ranch Cow Work, moving to AQHA Conformation classes and NRCHA classes.

Two featured divisions of the show were the NRCHA Derby and the Bridle Spectacular. The winners were:

Lisa Marie Bowmanhad the highest Non-Pro Bridle Spectacular composite score, winning the saddle pad donated by the Horse Outfitter Mobile Tack Shop. The tack shop was on site for the weekend’s show.

A special award given at this show was the Kim Rose Memorial Youth Ltd Circuit Award. The award honors Kim Rose who was a supporter of the Volunteer Ranch Horse Association and was instrumental in getting the NRCHA Derby and Bridle Spectacular going at the VolRHA shows. Congratulations to Lainey Krieger on winning the Kim Rose Memorial Youth Ltd Circuit Award at the Beat the Heat show.

Tammy Bledsoe summarized the weekend’s eevent: “We have had a great show with 845 entries. We met lots of new people and visited with old friends. Thank you Rick and Dolly Chayer for judging and thank you to our great scribes, Nicole Marrand Schelly Clark Bankston. We can't leave out our amazing show secretary, Katie Huttonfor all she does.”

Several of the riders at this show were sporting the new trend among western riders: a protective helmet. This was apropos since September was International Helmet Awareness Month, which encourages riders of all disciplines to wear helmets to prevent traumatic brain injury.

The last VolRHA show of the season comes up November 13-14, 2021 at the Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Find show bills and information at: http://www.volrha.com/
