By Ryne Rickman

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo squads were responsible for several notable performances November 4-6, 2021 at Southern Arkansas University as the Skyhawk men placed third and the women’s team finished fourth.

The UT Martin cowboys earned 440 points, just behind West Alabama (450) for runner-up in the 10-team standings. The Skyhawk cowgirls accumulated 90 points on the seven-team women’s field. Missouri Valley College (670 points) and West Alabama (295) sat atop the standings on the men’s and women’s sides, respectively.

Stetson Bierman was one of the top competitors in bareback riding, as he placed second in the first round (78), split second in average (157), and finished third in the short go (79). Job Dunlavey also dialed up points in all three phases – placing fourth across the board with a 151 average, a 74-point opening round, and a 77-point second go. Weston Hamilton’s 59 points in the short round were also good enough for sixth-place.

In calf roping, Will McCraw came away with third-place efforts in both average (26.6) and in the second round (12.5).
Grace Bryant and Abbie Austin represented the UT Martin women’s squad in breakaway roping. Bryant’s 7.3 average was the third-best time, while her 3.9 seconds in the short go ranked fourth in the field. Meanwhile, Austin’s time of 3.8 seconds in the second round earned her a third-place finish, and her 7.6 average ranked fifth.

The saddle bronc riding event featured a high-quality performance from UT Martin senior Jack Smithson. The Springfield, Tenn. native split first with 70 points in the first round and later placed third in average in a tough field.

A trio of cowboys picked up points for the Skyhawks in steer wrestling. Logan Neal got things started with 5.2 seconds in the first round, which was the second-best time in the event. Cole Walker scored points in average (23.6, fourth) and in the short go (16.4, sixth), while Spencer Davied’s 6.0 flat time in the opening round was the fourth-best time in the field.

In goat tying, Lauren Heck and Kailey Schmidt each turned in scoring efforts. Heck came in fifth place in both average (16.7) and in the short go (8.4), while Schmidt’s 8.1 seconds in the first round ranked as the fifth-best time.

The duo of Madison McFall and Mollie Stroup reeled in scoring performances in barrel racing. McFall completed the first round in 14.01 seconds to finish second in the field. Stroup came away with points in the opening go as her 14.23-second effort ranked fifth in the event.

UT Martin will conclude its fall calendar with a rodeo at Murray State on Nov. 18-20, 2021.
