VolRHA Salute the Troops

Photos by Gary Cox
The Volunteer Ranch Horse Association (VolRHA) was back at the Show Place Arena in Cordova, Tenn. for their third spring show this year: Salute the Troops on May 21-22, 2022. It was another full weekend with 170 classes to choose from: VolRHA, AQHA, NRCHA, and APHA, utilizing both the indoor and outdoor arenas. This was one of their biggest shows so far with almost 500 entries. Gary Cox took hundreds of photos and posted links to his albums on the Volunteer Ranch Horse Association facebook page.

The first day of the show saw over 60 cutting/herd work runs, 90 cattle runs, and over 60 trail/ranch riding runs. On Saturday afternoon, show officials hosted an Ice Cream Social for the youth competitors, sponsored by Summer Kelley with Farm Bureau Ins. in Covington, Tenn. On Sunday, Cowboy Church preceded the competition, with Shane Campbell bringing the message.

For more information about ranch horse shows, visit the American Ranch Horse Association website:

AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse (VRH) competitions provide opportunities for American Quarter Horses to demonstrate their versatile abilities in ranch riding, ranch trail, ranch reining, ranch cow work, and ranch conformation at member shows.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) promotes the traditions of the vaquero horsemen from the early Spanish and Mexican horsemen of California who managed range-bred cattle on ranches during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The vaquero’s working partner was a horse that could be controlled by a whisper-light touch on the reins, while still possessing the speed and grit to handle the rankest cattle. The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) also has a ranch riding division and APHA members were able to earn points on their Paint horses at this show. Find more information at APHA Ranch Riding on facebook.
