Southern Cutting Futurity Scholarship Available Southern Cutting Futurity President Lamar Thaggard has announced that applications are being taken for the Leigh Ann Barnett Scholarship. Applications must be submitted by May 1, 2001. The $2,000 perpetuating scholarship will be awarded in August to a 2001 high school graduate. Selection will be based on scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, leadership, good citizenship, financial need, and honors and awards for scholastic achievement or community activities. The annual scholarship is in memory of Ms. Barnett, who died in a car crash prior to her senior year at Leake Academy in Madden, Mississippi. Along with her scholastic achievements, Ms. Barnett excelled in leadership, citizenship and extracurricular activities. Leigh Ann and her parents, Steve and Brenda Barnett, and her sister Allison were active in the Southern Cutting Futurity. Last year's winner, Justin Franklin, of Noxapater, Mississippi, is presently enrolled at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi. The Southern Cutting Futurity, held annually in October in Jackson, Mississippi, is one of the nation's largest cutting horse events and traditionally contributes to deserving individuals and needs.
