Equine West Nile Virus Website Launched For Horse Owners Fort Dodge Animal Health has taken a proactive approach to keeping horse owners informed on the spread and dangers of West Nile Virus by launching an information-packed website and developing educational literature. In just two years, West Nile Virus has become one of the fastest growing health threats to horses in the United States. As a mosquito-borne disease, experts believe that West Nile Virus will soon spread from coast to coast. According to Rob Daily, Director Equine Business Unit for Fort Dodge Animal Health, the more that owners know about this disease, the better chance they have of preventing their horses from contracting it. "There is no specific treatment or cure for West Nile Virus, which means that prevention is the best approach toward this debilitating disease," said Daily. "For that reason, Fort Dodge has dedicated a website - www.equinewestnile.com - and produced a brochure to create greater awareness of the severity of West Nile Virus, and to highlight the preventive measures owners can take to protect their horses." Both the website and brochure provide information on the typical transmission cycle of the disease, its symptoms, and preventive actions, including inoculation with the new vaccine. The product was granted a conditional license by the U.S. Department of Agriculture this past summer. "Fort Dodge prides itself in being at the forefront of helping horse owners deal with emerging equine health threats," reported Daily. "Our new West Nile Virus vaccine and our public awareness initiatives illustrate our total commitment to partnering with owners and veterinarians for the wellness of their horses."
