First Ever Tie For Auction Weanling Award At 20th MSQHBF by Diane Higgs Mid South Breeders Futurity and AQHA shows drew 1055 entries during the three day run October 25-27 at Shelby Farms Show Place in Cordova, Tennessee, beginning with the traditional barbecue dinner courtesy of MSQHBF. Exhibitors competed for more than $25,000, awarded to the get of participating MSQHBF stallions in the futurity's 13 classes. AQHA classes featured additional cash awards. The new split combine show schedule proved to be a hit with exhibitors and show staff alike. All the favorites were back: Nutrena Feeds Maturity; Mid South Horse Review's Yearling Longeline; MSQHBF/ Bobby Davis Memorial 2 Year Old Snaffle; Coors Brewing and Horseshoe Casino Non Pro 2 & 3 Year Old Snaffle Bit and more. Show highlights included the Walk Trot 10 & under. A gorgeous show saddle was provided by Dobbs Ford of Memphis. This year contestants were judged on their horsemanship and personality by Stephanie Nichols, Commercial Appeal Hoofbeat's columnist, and Kathy Bousson, of Memphis, who has coordinated many of the Mid South Rodeo Queen comptetions. The class dubbed as the world's longest walk trot class drew 21 riders. Announcer Haskell Sheets quipped "at this time we have noted that our exhibitors have gotten their driver's licenses and graduated from high school. Taking not nearly as long and personality not up for consideration was the popular All Age Walk Trot with 45 participants. MSQHBF annual auction brought $17,000 in fees sold. Highest selling fee was that of Zippos Sheik, $1,500.00, owned by Ken Masterson Farms in Collierville, Tennessee. A first time ever tie for the prestigious Auction Weanling Award occurred this year between Vested Tiger Blaze, owned Jerry Wright - Wright's Quarter Horses - Judsonia, Arkansas and sired by Vested Tiger Band and CB Rose sired by Clue Bar Bonanza, lead by Steve Hill of Ecru, MS and owned by Herman Hussy of Mooreville, MS. NEWfees purchased allow the buyer to nominate the resulting foal as a weanling OR 2 year old!!!! Want to become part of the MSQHBF program? Deadline to enroll stallions is January 31, 2003.
