Barrels, bling, and grown adults on ponies!  The Dynamite Barrel Race, held at the Showplace Arena in Memphis, TN, March 15-17 certainly went off with quite a bang. The event featured three days packed with barrel racing, including an Adult Pony Race, a Futurity side pot and three money added Open races. In addition to the barrel racing excitement, vendors lined the perimeter of the venue, selling everything from jewelry to clothes to tack.

The action began on Friday with a 4D Open race, following a day of training sessions. Friday's Open featured $500 added money and an award to the winner from Diamond Cross Saddles. Clocking a smoking 14.582 seconds, Amber Mostaller on Bring Back the Jet took first place in the 1D on Friday.

Saturday ran trainers until noon and then picked up with the St. Patrick's Day Adult Pony Race. The lighthearted, jovial atmosphere turned hysterical when the Adult Pony Race began! Seven grown adults took turns running ponies through the clover-leaf pattern. While several riders were quite competitive, the others were running for laughs, and they got plenty! Dusty Pike of Caruthersville, MO pushed his pony to a first place finish, clocking a 16.093 seconds and winning the purse.

Following the pony race, nearly 300 horse and rider teams ran in Saturday's 4D Open race. With $1500 added and awards sponsored by Rhoda Hall and Cowgirl Glitz Custom Conchos, Saturday's Open was the big event of the weekend. When all was said and done, first place in the 1D went to Laurie Cooper of Humboldt, TN and her mount, Perks Panita, who crushed the competition clocking 14.339 seconds.

After the Open race, the Youth took over in the $250 added Youth 3D race. Cruising at 14.708, Ashley Brooks of South Fulton, TN won the Youth title on her horse Jane. Saturday’s races continued with a Futurity side pot featuring $500 added and awards by Best Ever Pads. Grant Patterson and his horse Whitewater Wildcat, of Chapel Hill, TN, rolled over their 14.73, claiming the top spot for the Futurity portion. The Dynamite Barrel Race closed on Sunday with another $1500 added Open Race. Once again, Laurie Cooper and Perks Panita outran the other 250 contestants to land on top. With her 14.334, she posted the fasted time of the entire weekend!

With approximately 780 total entries, coordinators Jamie White and Jayma Shomaker's barrel race was well received. According to White, the concept for the Dynamite Barrel Race originated out of necessity. Several races that used to be held annually in the area had moved to different locations, leaving a need for an affordable, competitive barrel race for people living in the Mid-South. Although the Dynamite event is relatively new, having had their first race just last year, the future looks bright with many upcoming shows, including one April 20-21 in Franklin, TN.
