Longreen Hunter Pace – April 28
2013/05/01
Longreen Foxhounds held their annual Hunter Pace on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at Jake and Harriet McFadden’s Birdlands Plantation near Como, MS.
Hunter Paces are fun and relaxing timed trail rides, typically held at the end of formal fox hunt seasons. They originated to simulate the pace that horses and riders would travel on a real foxhunt – sometimes walking as hounds are working to find scent; picking up the pace to a strong trot as hounds pick up scent and start running a line; then sometimes to a full gallop as hounds run hot on the line to “gone away!”
Riding a marked trail, with the optimum time pre-determined, to an imaginary fox hunt, competitors ride in small teams of 2 or 3 riders. There may be additional categories of competition such as: best costume, best time, best turn out, originality, etc.
Hunter paces are open to the public, and allow riders to enjoy the day, explore new territories, try out mounts, expose green horses to the territory, all the while raising funds for the care and up keep of foxhounds. If you've never been to one, consider trying it out.
