FEI Classics™ Klimke Wins Luhmühlen

By Kate Green

Ingrid Klimke (GER) rode brilliantly to produce a clear stadium round under huge pressure to win her home CCI4* at Luhmühlen (GER), presented by DHL.

In a thrilling finale, her flawless round on the 11-year-old Hannoverian mare FRH Escada JS denied New Zealander Jonelle Price her first CCI4* victory by just one-tenth of a penalty.

When Klimke entered the arena, she could not even afford a single time fault because second place holder Price, had ridden a perfect round on her exciting Olympic prospect, the 10-year-old Dressage-bred Faerie Dianimo. So had third place holder Michael Jung (GER) and his 15-year-old gelding, La Biosthetique Sam FBW. Christopher Burton (AUS) on the rising star Graf Liberty was in fourth, and Sir Mark Todd (NZL) with NZB Campino, was in fifth, which meant that there was no change to the top five after Cross Country.

Heiko Wahler’s Jumping course invited forward riding, but there was a tricky treble combination and the time was tight - 12 of the 25 finishers had time faults.

Belgian rider Julien Despontin, who was competing in only his second CCI4*, led a distinguished field of Olympians after Dressage. Despontin scored 31.9, one of the highest Dressage scores at CCI4* level, on the 14-year-old Waldano 36, a Hannoverian by Wolkenstanz. But his lead was short-lived.

After Cross Country, Despontin was off the leader board, moving the whole line of competitors up one notch: Klimke in first, Price in second, Michael Jung in third (Jung retired the fourth-placed FischerRocana FST on cross country), Burton in fouth, and Mark Todd in fifth.

Final results left the standings intact. All the top five finished on just their dressage scores, with no other penalties!
