Mid-South Pony Clubbers at USPC Championships East
By Vonna Read
West Tennessee Pony Club sent two members to US Pony Club Championships East, held July 22-26 at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia. Ethan and Grace Read. Ethan Read represented the Mid-South Region in Dressage Rally and Grace Read competed in Quiz rally.
The USPC National Championships bring contestants from all across the country competing in Dressage, Eventing, Mounted Games, Polocrosse, Show Jumping, Tetrathlon and Quiz. Each Region sends their top qualifiers as teams or as individual members of composite teams. Teams are scored not only on their riding, but also for their Horse Management.
There were 577 USPC competitors at Championships east. There were also 15 International Pony Club competitors. The International Games Championship is held each year, rotating among the US, Canada, Australia, and Great Britain. The USA hosted this year, with the competition on Saturday July 25. Australia was the winner of this year’s International Games competition.
Championships also provided educational opportunities. There was a demonstration of Working Equitation, i.e., Reining meets Dressage meets Trail class. In “A view from C,” the dressage judges (all recognized judges, 2 R's, and 1 S - Sally O'Connor) gave a presentation on their impressions of the dressage rides and held a Question and Answer session afterwards.
For US Pony Club Championships, the Mid-south Region sent 52 competitors. There were 75 in Dressage; 108 in Eventing; 65 in Games; 141 in Quiz; 152 in Show jumping; and 24 in Tetrathlon.
The Mid-South Region sent a Training Level Dressage Team. West Tennessee Pony Clubber Ethan Read and Ima Little Excited (aka Gus) were on a composite team with Leah Massa and Aine O'Rourke, both from Keeneland Pony Club; with Stable Manager Sarah Miller of Southern Illinois Pony Club. This was the whole team's first time at Championships in a mounted division. Ethan finished 10th out if 44 in the Training level musical freestyle. His team finished third overall – well done by the youngest team at Champion ships!
Grace Read was on a C team for Quiz Rally. The team included Jessica Dees from Peachtree Riding Center, Audrey DeRossett of Boskydell Pony Club, and Evelyn Juckett of Covered Bridge Pony Club. The team finished first!
